Sometimes as we indulge ourselves in the sport of ultrarunning we overlook opportunities to help others. Over the years The Old Goat Runner’s have been invited to participate in fund raising efforts for different charities. Via our web site and through direct appeals we have contributed to funding assistants at Chilean Orphanages, helped fund Cancer research, and purchased defibrillators for high school athletic departments. This year we are adding two others. Brazil 135 and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Brazil135
What's tougher than an ultramarathon with 30,000 ft. cumulative elevation gain? How about growing up in the slums of Sao Paulo. On January 23, 2010, a team of US runners will tackle the Brazil 135, a 135-mile ultramarathon through the mountains of the Minais Gerais province of Brazil. As part of the race, the US team would like to make a difference for Brazilian kids in the local area. Specifically, we're trying to raise $150,000 to build a gym at a mission that serves children from low-income families in Miracatur city near Sao Paulo. You can help by visiting our website, www.brazil135teamUSA.com and making an online tax-deductible contribution to the gym project. The US team includes Andy Jones-Wilkins, Brian Krogman, Tony Portera, Ken Posner, Lisa Smith-Bachen, and Sister Marybeth Lloyd.
"Join Team Wounded Warrior Project to Support America's Heroes!"
The mission of the wounded warriors Project is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women. To help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of these Warriors. The Wounded Warriers Project is the designated charity for the 2009 Nanny Goat 24 Hour Trail Race.
Lorenzen Cancer Foundation Pancreatic Walks and Runs
Your fundraising efforts will benefit the non-profit Lorenzen Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to raise awareness, increase education and support research aimed at changing the tragic human relationship to pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the most aggressive of the cancers - time from diagnosis to demise is typically measured in weeks and it the least funded of the major cancers.
Megan Myer's Fund
Megan Myers died during a cross country meet. Her mother started the fund to provide automatic defibrillators for high school athletic departments, to provide cardiac screening, and to provide cross-country scholarships. In 2008 Nanny Goat runners raised over $3200 in support of this fund
